What is Chat?
Talk to your team in Kokar — rooms, direct messages, voice notes, posts and calls, next to the work they are about.
Chat lives inside your workspace, next to the tasks and docs the conversation is about. No second tool to switch to, no copying links between apps.
Rooms and direct messages
Chat has two kinds of conversation, and the difference is who can be in it.
Rooms are for the team — one per client, per project, or per topic. Add the people who belong in it and everything said there is visible to all of them.
Direct messages are one-to-one and private to the two people in them. They cannot grow into a group; when a conversation needs more people, start a room instead.
Send a message
Type and send. A message can carry text, files, or both.
Messages are capped at 5,000 characters — if you are writing more than that, what you have is probably a post or a doc.
Reply to a specific message
Pick any message and reply to it directly. Your reply quotes the original, so a busy room stays readable and nobody has to guess which question you answered.
Mention people
Type @ to pull someone into the conversation. You can mention:
- a person — they get notified
- a team — everyone on it gets notified
- everyone in the room, for the things that genuinely warrant it
React with emoji
React to a message instead of replying to it.
Voice notes
Record and send a voice note when typing is the slow way to say it. Recordings are capped at 5 minutes, and the player shows the length before you play it.
Share files
Attach files to any message. They stay in the conversation and stay downloadable — no expiry, no separate upload step.
How large a single file can be depends on your plan; the figures are on the pricing page.
Posts
Some things are announcements, not chat. A post is a longer, richer piece written in a room — formatted like a document, with a title, an optional cover image and its own comment thread underneath.
Posts come in four kinds so people can tell at a glance what they are looking at: announcement, discussion, idea and update. Anything that matters beyond today can be pinned to the top of the room's post feed.
Comments on a post are separate from the room's messages, so the discussion stays attached to the post rather than scrolling away.
Edit and delete
You can edit or delete your own messages at any time. Room admins can also delete messages in the rooms they administer.
Calls
Start an audio or video call from any room or direct message. A call card appears in the conversation, so anyone in it can join from the message thread.
Calls are available on Business and Enterprise. How many hours a month, and how many people fit in one call, depend on the plan — see the pricing page.
A call's places only free up when someone leaves
The people limit counts everyone connected at once, not how many were invited. Once a call is full, the next person is told so — someone has to leave before they can join.
Call hours are counted per workspace per month and reset at the start of each calendar month. A call already in progress is never cut off when the budget runs out; only new calls are blocked until the month turns over.
Manage a room
Whoever creates a room is its admin, and can rename it, change its picture, add and remove members, and make someone else an admin.
Frequently asked questions
Someone can't join our call — why?
A call has a fixed number of places, and they are only freed when someone leaves. Anyone joining a full call is told so, which means one person has to drop out before the next can come in.
How big a file can I send?
It depends on your plan, and the limit is per file rather than a total. The figures are on the pricing page.
Can I delete a message after sending it?
You can edit or delete your own messages at any time. Room admins can also delete anyone's message in their room.
Can I add someone to a direct message?
No — a direct message is between two people and stays that way. Create a room when a conversation needs more people in it.
How long can a voice note be?
Five minutes. The recorder stops on its own when it reaches the limit.
